It grows across northern Australia in a range of habitats in sandy, swampy or rocky soils.
The roots of Bloodroot are used as a red-purple colour dye for Pandanus weaving.
Flowering occurs most of the year except for August and September.
Its growth is dominated by the wet/dry monsoonal climate.
During dry winter, it dies, but its roots survives underground.
It regrows when fresh water arrives (wet summer season).
