Description

Shrub 1.5–4 m high; branchlets moderately to densely villous with rusty simple hairs. Leaves narrowly ovate to ovate, 30–90 mm long, 15–40 mm wide, acute to obtuse; margins plane to slightly recurved; glabrous above; villous beneath with mid-dense to dense, curved or wavy, rusty simple hairs over short stellate hairs, secondary veins apparent. Stipules ovate, 4–6 mm long, caducous. Panicles pyramidal to hemispherical, 3–10 cm diam., usually dense. Bracts caducous. Pedicels 1.5–4 mm long. Flowers cream (rarely yellow), externally grey- to golden-villous. Hypanthium 1–1.5 mm long. Sepals 1.5–2.5 (–3) mm long. Petals narrow-obovate, 1–2 mm long (rarely absent). Ovary virtually inferior, summit villous. Style 1.5–3 mm long, branched above midway. Torus of capsule near middle. Operculum c. half pyrene length.

Diagnostic Features

Close to Pomaderris ligustrina but distinguished by the (normally) petalous flowers, coarser stems (more than 1 mm diam. immediately below inflorescence) that retain their pubescence for more than one year, and usually larger leaves.

Distribution

Found from near Brisbane, Queensland, mainly on the coastal fall of the Great Dividing Range, through New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory to just west of Melbourne, Victoria.

Habitat

Grows in a wide range of woodland and open forest communities, commonly near watercourses and/or rocky outcrops; 40–900 m alt.

Taxonomic Notes

Common in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, where it may hybridise with Pomaderris andromedifolia.
