Welcome to the Bryophytes of Australia.

The Bryophytes of Australia aims to provide an up to date synthesis of taxonomic knowledge of the country's mosses, liverworts and hornworts. The Bryophytes of Australia is one component of the Flora of Australia and sits alongside the vascular plant flora. The Flora of Australia is designed for use by anyone wanting authoritative information on the names, characteristics, distribution and habitat of the native and naturalised plants of Australia.

In 2018 the Flora of Australia transitioned from a book series, which provided static taxonomic treatments, to a dynamic and integrated online resource. Published open-access under a creative commons license, this online Flora of Australia is widely accessible, providing users with easy navigation through a large and diverse flora, and allows for accelerated publication of new and updated taxonomic information. The Flora of Australia draws information from a range of sources, including nomenclatural data, distribution maps, images and interactive keys.

A useful introduction to bryophytes can be found at Australian Bryophytes.

Updates

Most of the treatments (including those originally published in Volume 51) from the Australian Mosses Online (AMO) have been transferred here. However, AMO still contains information and many quality illustrations (line drawings, photographs) planned for incorporation into Bryophytes of Australia.

A new Contributor Guidelines document has been released that now includes formatting of descriptions for Liverworts and Hornworts!
